HELP SAVE BEAUCOUP POP!!!!

Hey there Poppers!!  On this day, we approach all you awesome people with a proposition of sorts.  A request, if you will.

Save us, please!

As of right now, at the end of January, we are losing access to our recording equipment. In order for Beaucoup Pop to carry on we need to raise quite a bit of money to replace what we are going to lose. The BCP team plans to contribute what we can, but need help from our AMAZING listeners!! We enjoy bringing you, the listener, your weekly doses of geekery and we want that to continue. Please give what you can to help our show.

Deck the Halls with Blu-ray Movies. Fa la la la la la la la la.

The day after Christmas may be the saddest day of the year. We spend so much time and money getting prepared for the holiday and then it comes and goes in a flash. You blink and you miss it. But if you are a big kid at heart like I am, there's one positive in all this. After Christmas is done you now have a bunch of really cool toys to play with!

As I've gotten older the items I find under the tree come Christmas morning have changed. At one time my packages were full of G.I. Joe, Transformers and Super Friends action figures. Now I get clothes, books, DVDs and Blu-rays. Oh who am I kidding, I still get G.I. Joes, Transformers and other cool toys and collectibles. Let's be honest. That will never change! This year I was fortunate enough to receive a lot of nice gifts, and included in that stack of presents was a little bundle of Blu-rays. Since I haven't written about movies yet I wanted to share my thoughts on the latest additions to my film collection.

It's All About the Benjamins: Online Ordering vs. Brick and Mortar

We all love a good bargain. At least I think we do. I don't know many people who go out of their way to pay more for something than they have to. And let's face it, there is no better place to find good deals than on the Internet. With the exception of clothes and food, roughly 85% of my purchases are made online. I've bought everything from DVDs, tools, a grill, even my latest television. Through it all I never struggled with my decision to buy online versus picking my items up at a traditional brick and mortar store. That was until I started looking into buying my comic books through online retailers.

An ex-Marine haunted by a tragic past, Tommy Riordan returns to his hometown of Pittsburgh and enlists his father, a recovered alcoholic and his former coach, to train him for an MMA tournament awarding the biggest purse in the history of the sport. As Tommy blazes a violent path towards the title prize, his brother, Brendan, a former MMA fighter unable to make ends meet as a public school teacher, returns to the amateur ring to provide for his family. CATS SCREAM YAWNS

Pertinent to this week's upcoming episode...

Justin,

Book Review: The Temeraire Series

I didn't always love to read. There was a time when books were like Kryptonite to pre-high school Chris. Thankfully I matured (somewhat) and reading has become one of my favorite things to do. There is nothing like a good novel. But with an ever increasing stack of comics on my nightstand and a DVR that never seems to be empty, it has been difficult finding the time to crack one open. Nonetheless, I am always on the lookout for a good read.

His Majesty's Dragon
(Temeraire, Book 1)
A few months ago I came across a blog post by Jerry Holkins over at Penny Arcade where he mentioned a book he finished and really enjoyed called His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik. Let's just say he had me at dragon and I immediately jumped over to the author's website to find out more. I learned that this was the first in a series of books about to see the release of its seventh installment. Dubbed the Temeraire series, based on the name of the book's main character, the novels are a mixture of fantasy and alternate history.

The events take place during the Napoleonic War and are written from the perspective of the British. Although the books deal with real events, and many of the characters are historical figures, there is one slight alteration. In Novik's universe, in addition to having ground troops and naval forces, both the French and the British have an air force comprised of dragons manned by a crew of aviators. Essentially each dragon wears an elaborate harness that holds a crew and supplies. There is a captain, a first lieutenant, a medical officer and then soldiers manning guns and bombs. The dragons can speak and are often times extremely intelligent, although their intelligence varies depending on how seriously their aviators take their education. It's one of those ideas that is so perfect I was amazed that no one thought of it sooner, but I'm glad someone did because the books are amazing.

New Releases for 12/13/11

Here are a few of the New Releases for the week of December 13, 2011. A few good titles, just in time for the holidays, including my personal favorite, The Rocketeer: 20th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray and Doctor Lautrec and the Forgotten Knights for the Nintendo 3DS!

MOVIES

The Rocketeer: 20th Anniversary Edition [Blu-ray]
- For the first time, this Blu-ray will present The Rocketeer in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio with 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. Sadly, no additional features other than the trailer for the film.
Check out a review of the Blu-Ray edition HERE!

Monica & David  [DVD]
 - Monica & David is the love story of two adults with Down syndrome and the family who strives to support their needs. Monica and David are blissfully in love and want what other adults have an independent life. Full of humor, romance and everyday family drama, the film uses intimate fly-on-the wall footage to reveal the complexity of their story. While Monica and David are capable beyond expectations, their parents, afraid of mainstream rejection of adults with intellectual disabilities, have trouble letting go.

Transformers Trilogy (Transformers / Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen / Transformers: Dark of the Moon) [DVD/Blu-ray]

Change is good. Try it . You'll like it!

I've been reading comic books steadily since I was about 10 years old. The majority of those comics have followed the exploits of super powered beings in masks and flashy costumes. But I've noticed a trend developing these past couple of years. The percentage of superhero books in my weekly stack has steadily dwindled while my overall enjoyment in what I'm reading has increased significantly.

Now I love superheros as much as the next person. But let's be honest. There is only so much you can do with these characters that hasn't already been done. When you are writing characters that have existed for close to 75 years (I'm looking at you Superman), it's hard to find new and exciting situations to put them in. Occasionally you get something you've never been given before and it stands out. Sadly, more often than not, the stories are derivative and lack any real tension because you know the good guys always have to make it out safe and sound. But more than just being the same old thing, my tastes have changed because I've finally learned to see comics for what they truly are: a medium and not a genre.

Who the Frak is Chris?

If there wasn't enough of us already, Beaucoup Pop is pleased to welcome our newest blog contributor, Christopher Vigale!

Born and raised in New Jersey, Chris has managed to avoid a life of spray tans, clubbing and fist pumping. Instead, he spends his time reading comics and obsessing over television and movies. His tastes are diverse to say the least, and he finds something to enjoy in just about every genre of film, television, comics and music. He considers Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers to be his favorite movie of all time and Doctor Who to be the pinnacle of serialized television. Having always wanted to be a writer, Chris has turned to blogging to share his love of pop culture with anyone else who shares his passion for all things pop. When he's not spending time enjoying his hobbies, you can find him enjoying life in the company of his wife and their little chihuahua!!

Chris also has his own blog, The Chronicles of Pop, and you can follow him on twitter, @Christopher2814.
