Draw Me Like One Of Your French Girls

Hi again everyone! With all the artists that are featured on Beaucoup Pop and the fact that the con season is here, I thought I would give you all some of my thoughts on being on the other side of things...that of being the consumer.  Hopefully you can learn a thing or two from my experiences with a project that I started with last year.

Phoenix by Tressa Bowling
I have always been a big fan of sequential art and have been reading comics ever since I found my older brother's stash of Uncanny X-Men and Man-Thing comics and Heavy Metal magazines.  Over the years I have had the opportunity to meet some amazing local artists who work in and around comics and I wanted to figure out a way for me have a small piece of work by these talented people that would be easy for me to display in my Nerd Lair (calling it a "man cave" just doesn't seem appropriate for what all is housed there).  So, last summer I started commissioning sketch cards from local artist friends and what started as a small project has continued to grow and grow until I have needed to buy bigger and bigger displays.  Here are some things I have learned that can maybe help anyone else out there who is considering commissioning some of their own original art (with some samples of my favorite pieces).

Episode 39 - Ring in the New Year!

The cast of Beaucoup Pop is back, bringing you everything you need to know about whats going on in the pop culture world...and maybe some things that you didn't need to know, BUT WE GIVE IT TO YOU ANYWAY!!!
Welcome back Poppers!  Hope you have a fantastic holiday and you're ready to plow into the new year...the Last Year...THE END OF THE WORLD!! We do some much needed catching up (Matt is back after a month of being absent) and we talk about our New Year's resolutions...er...2012 Goals.  Could starting a llama farm be one of them? You'll need to listen to find out.
We also talk a little more in detail about the current "Uh Oh!" situation the Beaucoup Pop gang are in. You've probably seen our prior "Help Save Beaucoup Pop" post, that the four of us are in a bit of a pickle. As of right now, at the end of January, we are losing access to our recording equipment. In order for Beaucoup Pop to carry on we need to raise quite a bit of money to replace what we are going to lose. The BCP team plans to contribute what we can, but need help from our AMAZING listeners!! We enjoy bringing you, the listener, your weekly doses of geekery and we want that to continue. Please give what you can to help our show.

Artist of the Month: Mike Maydak

This month's featured artist is Kentucky native, Mike Maydak. Mike currently resides in Covington, Kentucky and teaches for Cincinnati State.

About 6 months after graduating from Northern Kentucky University Mike worked for a short time with Bluewater Comic on such titles as 1782: The Year Of Blood and The Blackbeard Legacy before becoming an independent, freelance artist.

Mike has found the most success with his acrylic paintings...most notably his house and architectural works.

According to Mike, his talent for creating distorted and exaggerated structures started as an accident. “[While] working on improving my background skills [I] just sketched the neighborhood I live in. People loved them, and they evolved into paintings.”

Matt's Maydak print which is hanging in his kitchen!

Mike is currently promoting the release of  MAYDAK Volume 1, a collection of paintings, sketches, and other works of art into an 88 page full color hardcover book. If you pre-order your copy on Etsy.com you'll receive free shipping (within the United States) and an original sketch on the inside front cover! You can also pre-order a copy from Barnes & Noble. Mike shared a copy of his artbook with us, and it's incredible! He expects the book to arrive late September/early October 2011.

Mike hopes to have a book release and meet and greet at Keystone Bar in Covington, but no date is currently set. Hopefully Beaucoup Pop will be at the Keystone meet and greet, so stay tuned for more information. And if you're in the area, come by and say "Hi" and pick up your copy of the book from the artist himself.

If your in the Louisville aread, head over to the Revelry Gallery to see Maydak's work on display mid August 2011!

Mike is also working on a line of resin miniature statues in the same vein as the structures he paints. This particular work-in-progress prototype stands at about 5 inches tall.
