Episode 80 - RPG Kickin' It

The cast of Beaucoup Pop is back, bringing you everything you need to know about whats going on in the pop culture world...and maybe some things that you didn't need to know, BUT WE GIVE IT TO YOU ANYWAY!!!

Put your gaming hat on Poppers because this week we have the pleasure of welcoming game developer Monte Cook (of Dungeons & Dragons Third Edition fame) to the show. We get the details on his journey through the very a successful Kickstarter campaign for his tabletop RPG, ~NUMENERA~! Through tireless efforts he was able to surpass his $20,000 goal and raise over $500,000, from more than 4,500 backers, and reaching 30 different stretch goals!!

Numenera is a science fantasy roleplaying game set in the far distant future. Humanity lives amid the remnants of eight great civilizations that have risen and fallen on Earth. These are the people of the Ninth World. This new world is filled with remnants of all the former worlds: bits of nanotechnology, the dataweb threaded among still-orbiting satellites, bio-engineered creatures, and myriad strange and wondrous devices. These remnants have become known as the numenera.

Player characters explore this world of mystery and danger to find these leftover artifacts of the past, not to dwell upon the old ways, but to help forge their new destinies, utilizing the so-called “magic” of the past to create a promising future. (www.numenera.com)

The rulebook of Numenera is going to be a full-color book with art and design by the amazing Kieran Yanner, as well as a team of other talented artists.

Check out the Numnera Kickstarter promo video to get a feel for the game from the creator himself!

Want more? Be sure to read The Amber Monolith, the first short story from the 9th World setting and one of the stretch goals of the Numenera Kickstarter, is now free and available to everyone. You can read it in your browser as a flip book, or download a PDF Version. (links in the show notes below)

Lastly, our good friend and gamer chick, Natasha from Kentucky Geek Girl drops by to join in the interview...and to partake in our usual shenanigans.

The Best Mustaches in Comic Books!

In honor of Movember, I have decided I should enlighten all of you to some of the greatest mustaches you can find in comic books!

Commissioner Gordon

First up, a classic in terms of ‘staches: The cop ‘stache. This staple of the follicular world has been around as long as our boys in blue have and makes cameo appearances in pornos now and then. The best example in comics is nestled between Commissioner James Gordon’s nose and upper lip. You can’t help but respect the law when you see this guy’s mustache. Whether it’s in its youthful red edition or the wise looking grey, crime has to cease its presence.

The Warriors Three

For spot number four I am going to cheat and use three characters. But when you gaze upon these mustaches that can only be found in the mythological and verdant Asgard you will understand why. All of these spectacular ‘staches capture the essence of the character quite well. Hogun the Grim sports a horseshow mustache that any Hell’s Angel would be proud of. Fandral the Dashing obviously uses a lot of wax to achieve that Errol Flynn look. Finally,Volstagg the Lion-Hearted. This man has the most unique mustache in comics (not the best though). How does he get it to do that? I think it’s worth noting that Jack Kirby drew a lot of mustaches like this, perhaps this is what his looked like when it got away from him.

Episode 77 - Maydak on Deck

The cast of Beaucoup Pop is back, bringing you everything you need to know about whats going on in the pop culture world...and maybe some things that you didn't need to know, BUT WE GIVE IT TO YOU ANYWAY!!!

We welcome Covington artist Mike Maydak on this weeks episode. Mike and Beaucoup Pop have quite a history. Last year we featured Mike as our Artist of the Month, and had him on the show for an interview. You know, way back when, around episode 16.

That's right, the elusive lost episode 16 which, due to technical difficulties, was never able to be aired. Well it took us over a year, but we got him back! And it was worth it, cause we go from what seems to be a normal BCP interview to something that can't really be discribed...you'll just have to listen for yourself.

We also give quick reviews for Wreck it Ralph and Man With the Iron Fists on top of discussing the BIG geek news of the week, Disney's purchase of Lucasfilm...and Star Wars Episode 7.

4 Reasons to Be Excited About Disney Buying Star Wars

Unless you have been hiding out on Tatooine (which if so tell me how to cross into fictional universes!) you may have seen where Disney has purchased LucasFilms and therefore Star Wars. This has engendered the typical responses from nerd and non-nerd alike about ruining the franchise, valuing profit above creativity, and how re-boots & sequels are bad. But I stand firmly in the opinion that this will be a good thing for Star Wars and for Star Wars fans. Let me tell you why.

#4 Now your kids can have their own Star Wars too
When did Star Wars first capture your imagination? Wasn't it with youthful exuberance and innocence that you grew to love those films? I understand that you're an adult now with adult tastes but you have to remember why you love Star Wars. Whatever gets created now will be aimed at kids and we have to realize there is nothing wrong with that. Films can be aimed at kids and still enjoyable for adults. This new movie will hopefully recapture the heroic and adventurous spirit of the original films and take a whole new generation of kids to a galaxy far, far, away.

#3 Look at the Marvel films

If I had time I would type a billion dollar signs
For anyone doubting Disney's ability to get talent, gather them together, and then stand back and let magic happen I would counter you with the Marvel films. Disney by and large seems to just opens up their piggy bank and let folks make great films. The Avengers is obviously a sterling example and hopefully they take a similar route here. The fact of the matter is, Disney just spent 4 billion dollars to get Star Wars. The Avengers has taught them that you can make a movie and make money or you can make an awesome movie and make awesome money. I can't imagine they will overlook this lesson.

Hello Poppers!
